THE FUTURE OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography and image-making technology is reaching out in many new directions at once and at speed. Digital cameras no longer just provide easier ways to make traditional photos. Chris and Ade investigate emerging and future tech that will help us all make new and exciting photographs and images. Cameras, devices, software, hardware - we aim to cover all angles in the pursuit of The Future of Photography.

183 GIFs and Cinemagraphs

Despite the lack of clarity regarding its pronunciation, the GIF has left a lasting impression on our internet culture. As the first web-based looping video format it is now part of memes and the general vocabulary that we use every day in messengers and social media. It sort of started with the dancing baby in 1996 and Cinemagraphs are a subset of the genre. Apps: GIF Toaster, gifgab, Picoo camera, Cinemagraph app.

181 LDR, SDR, HDR - Dynamic Range

LDR, SDR, HDR. Today we start a two-part episode on high dynamic range. First, we need to make sure we all understand what the heck we are discussing! So here is a primer, a bit technical, hopefully useful.

LDR: That horribleness you see in photos where the whole image is close to a single brightness or luminosity level. SDR: What your TV displays - unless you have a modern, probably expensive one. HDR: High Dynamic Range! But what does it actually mean?

We talk about some standards and also add colour into the mix.

Picks of the week: A whiter white, [Proof that HDR isn’t necessary](https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/70220281 ) if you have good stories, 1920s mugshots.

Why do we turn our white balance adjustment wheels the wrong way? Well, there is some science there involving Lord Kelvin, Max Planck, a lightbulb, electromagnetic radiation and quantum mechanics. This week we tell that story and apply what we learn to our photography. There's also some pinhole goodness.

It's impossible to discuss societal impacts of photography without considering the selfie - so this week we do just that. We all know the impact is huge but it has multiple dimensions, some quite serious, and we aim to cover those in this show and also consider (of course) the future of selfies and self-portraits. The links this week are well worth reading and watching... 137 The Future of Memories (Photography and Minimalism)

01 . 07 . 2020

Notes

Minimalism is very popular right now. One mainstream interpretation of minimalism is to help clear your mind/life by having less physical stuff. But stuff has memories. Or does it? Does the stuff just trigger the memories? Could a photo of the thing do the same? Is a digital record of our most precious things the way forward? Picks of the week: Olympus, iPhone camera app silvertone filter, Gah! zine, Masao Yamamoto (2, 3), the Glucksman.

134 The Future of Photo Education

10 . 06 . 2020

Notes

A lot of photo education used to be face-to-face in-person education. From camera clubs to college classes. From private photography schools to photo workshops or photo tours. Since mid-March in 2020, educators had to think about creative ways to achieve similar outcomes while being remote. In this episode we'll take a look at some of the concepts and technologies that make virtual classrooms and online teaching possible today. Chris' new service Photo Sensei. Stuff we discussed: BigBlueButton, Canon beta webcam utility, Fuji as webcam. Picks of the week: Elgato CamLink 4k, Abdi film carrier for scanning, the Foxglove, Series on computational photography on DPReview.

Do genres breed technology or does technology breed genres? All this and more in TFOP this week! Picks of the week: 3StreetGallery, Future cameras, Portraying pregnancy.

Over the history of photography, less and less skill was required to take photos. Photography used to be alchemy: chemistry, glass plates, very skillful processes. TFOP is 1 year old!! Also: 5 years ago, spotting a classic camera was easy - it was film. Ade has a podcast about that and so does Chris. But now, how do we tell? Cameras now 15 years old are digital and digital technology is now mature enough that older cameras are not simply disappointing. Can you spot a future classic? Ade thinks he has one. So what exactly is the future of classic cameras? What will we look for? What will seem laughably lame?

It’s the marmite of sensors - you either love it or hate it. We are of course talking about the Fujifilm X-Trans sensor. Some say it delivers mushy detail and others say it has beautiful rendering. Occasionally there is common ground where most people think Lightroom does a not-great job on the raw files. But what’s this? Another new Fuji camera with a Bayer sensor you say? Yes, the Fujifilm X-T100 may be badged as entry-level but it has a lot going for it when it comes to sensor technology and picture quality.
